The result of surgical treatment of 25 cases of hyperthyroidism, operated during the 4 years period from on May, 1972 to December, 1976 at the department of General Surgery, Han, Yang University Hospital, isreported.
The results as follows:
1) The sex distribution was 21 female and 4 male, making a female and male ratio of 5.3: l. 2. Histopathological examination showed diffuse toxic goiter 92% and nodular toxic goiter in 8% of cases.
3) The frequent clinical symptoms were palpitation, tremor, profuse sweating and exophthalmos in that order.
4) The standard technique used in most cases was bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy. Remained thyroid tissue was about 10 cm in almost cases.
5) One case of hypoparathyroidism was developed temporarily. 6) Operative mortality was 0 percent.
